Student Cadet, Rangatahi Programme, Waitemata District Health Board

Part-time Monday - Friday at 0.6 FTE (Fixed Term)

Location:  Waitakere and North Shore Hospitals

Please note this is only open to Māori and/or Pacific students involved in health workforce development programmes including but not limited to Kia Ora Hauora, Rangatahi Programme, Health Science Academies and Pathways West.

The Cadet role is an amazing way for Māori and/or Pacific students to get up close to a range of careers in the health sector and to become interested in Waitemata DHB as an employer of choice. The Rangatahi Programme is part of our overall strategy to employ a workforce that reflects the cultural diversity of the communities we serve.

The role is a paid part-time job usually in clinical support role, and it is designed be a learning experience.  Cadets learn about what it’s like to work in a healthcare organisation and about key concepts such as professional practice, the interface between clinical and cultural aspects of healthcare and interdisciplinary team work. The Cadet role aims to build understanding of qualified health professional roles, to inspire Māori and/or Pacific students to value their culture in a mainstream health system, and to connect these students with peer and professional networks.

The ideal candidate will be planning to enrol in a tertiary health-related qualification in 2018, and have an interest in making a positive difference to the health status of Māori and/or Pacific communities and therefore improving the health of the overall population in Aotearoa New Zealand. Preference will be given to rangatahi living or studying in West Auckland, North Shore or Rodney.

All Cadets will work under the direction and supervision of a designated health professional or Waitemata DHB staff member. Orientation and training to support a negotiated work plan that compliments the Cadet's area of interest will be provided.

The essential requirements are:

·    NCEA Level 1 with basic literacy and numeracy credits

·    ability to use personal computer and basic software applications including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

·    excellent written and verbal communication skills

·    commitment to a career in health.
