Deaf Aotearoa Holdings Limited (trading as Deaf Aotearoa) is the operational service delivery arm of Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand lnc, the organisation mandated as the collective voice of Deaf people in New Zealand and the New Zealand member of the World Federation of the Deaf.
 
Led by a dynamic and committed leadership team, more than 70 permanent staff across 14 offices make a difference to several thousand Deaf New Zealanders in inspiring and creative ways. Contracted to deliver a range of services by the Ministries of Health, Education, and Social Development as well as the Tertiary Education Commission, the organisation is the only national service provider for Deaf people, a role we take great pride in. We provide sign language interpreting services through iSign, which contracts more than 80 interpreters across a wide range of settings. In May each year we run New Zealand Sign Language Week, which lights up the whole country with the language and culture of the Deaf community.
 
Particular skills/competencies sought
Directors are required to set Deaf Aotearoa on a path of ongoing development and success. In particular we are seeking people with qualifications and experience in the areas of Law, Finance, HR, and Marketing. Knowledge of the not-for-profit sector is desirable, and a willingness to learn about Deaf people and their unique culture is essential.
 
Commitment required
Board meetings are held quarterly and will take place during the week, for up to 4 hours.
 
Geographic considerations
Board meetings will be held in Wellington, however board members may be domiciled throughout the country.
 
Remuneration
Unpaid, although a meeting honorarium will be paid and travel and accommodation costs (if required) will be met by Deaf Aotearoa.
